Chapter Ten

Glory let herself out the back door, taking the short path to the moon garden. It was late, after ten. Luke was finally asleep, exhausted from his earlier episode with Nat. Jace had holed up in the office most of the evening, and as far as she knew he was still there, working on the DeMarco deal.

What was so special about that vineyard that Jace married her to get it? When it came to work, Jace had a single focus. He was definitely a goal setter, a man used to getting what he wanted, a man not above using deception to attain whatever he desired.

He so was not the man for her.

Glory curled up on one of the new padded lawn chairs. The exotic blend of jasmine and angel’s trumpet soothed her, reminded her how much she loved the ranch.

Being able to stay at the ranch was a dream come true, and she had Jace to thank for that. She just hated feeling so indebted to him. She was used to taking care of herself and Luke. Owing someone went against everything she believed in. She recognized the chip on her shoulder. She especially hated owing Jace. Earlier today, she’d signed the ranch agreement then left the papers on top of Jace’s briefcase. She’d waited for him to mention the documents, but he hadn’t. His silence bothered her.

Glory relaxed, melting into the chair. White flowers and silvery leaves glowed under the moonlight. She inhaled, taking the fragrant night air into her lungs.

The screen door moaned, then thwacked closed.

Jace.

Gravel crunched as he walked to her.

“Mind if I join you?”

She closed her eyes to his silky smooth voice and everything he made her feel. He’s a means to an end, she told herself. Get along with him. He’ll be gone soon, going back to L.A. and Erika.

“You live here now.” She regretted the words the second they left her mouth. “I can’t stop you.” Darn that chip.

He sat, swinging his long legs up onto the recliner.

Glory curled her legs more tightly under her. “I’m sorry. I’m trying, Jace.”

“So am I.” His eyes were trained on the sky, a sky filled with star glitter.

“I’m going to head back to L.A. on Tuesday,” he said. “I want to be there to present the formal offer, to hold DeMarco’s hand.”

She’d been expecting his departure, but she hadn’t expected the way her stomach would twist. “Okay.”

“I filled your job at the diner.”

“Great.”

“I’ll make sure you have money in your account.”

“Thank you.” Her mouth went dry.

“I’ve started the paperwork to legally change Luke’s name to Stone. You’ll need to sign.”

“I will,” Glory said.

“Good.”

Silence stretched between them.

“Will you start work on your horse camp?” Jace asked.

“Yes. I’m excited and looking forward to sharing Red Moon Ranch with other kids.”

When Jace didn’t reply, she angled her head to see him better. He watched her, his eyes reflecting the moonlight.

“You’re remarkable, Glory,” he said softly.

The unexpected compliment threw her off–balance. “I’m not. I’m just a mom.”

“A damned good one. The way you are with Luke, I can’t even imagine what it took to get you to that point.
